You can use health insurance to purchase eyeglasses or contact lenses for treatment for children of less than nine years of age.

Eligibility
These benefits are paid for eyeglasses or contact lenses prepared to treat juvenile amblyopia or strabismus or to correct refraction after surgery for congenital cataracts.
They are not paid for eyeglasses for simple vision correction in cases such as nearsightedness or astigmatism.
Also, insurance does not cover eye patches and Fresnel prisms used for correcting strabismus or other purposes.

The amount of benefits is 70% (80% for a preschool child) of the actual amount you paid, up to the maximum amount for eyeglasses for amblyopia (38,200 yen) or contact lenses (13,000 yen/lens) x 1.048.

Second and subsequent purchases
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses for children of less than five years of age may be purchased once again after at least one year has passed since the previous purchase.
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses for children aged five years or older may be purchased once again after at least two years have passed since the previous purchase.
