Removing a family member as a dependent

You must complete the necessary procedures to remove a family member as a dependent if he or she no longer is or needs to be a dependent or no longer eligible as a dependent for reasons such as employment, death, or earning income above the income levels for dependent certification.
You must also complete the procedures to remove a family member as a dependent if he or she receives unemployment benefits from employment insurance or receives compensation during leave such as maternity allowance or injury and sickness allowance.

Required documents:
Health insurance card (for the dependent to be removed)
Elderly Benefits Card, Certificate of Application of Maximum Copayment Amount, Certificates Issued for Specific Disease Treatment (if issued)
Notes:
  • If the family member has joined another health insurance society due to employment or other reasons, please attach a copy of his or her health insurance card of the health insurance society or any other document that can be used to confirm the date of attaining eligibility.
  • If the family member has become an insured person of his or her employer’s health insurance society due to an increase in income, please attach a copy of his or her health insurance card of the health insurance society or any other document that can be used to confirm the date of attaining eligibility.
  • If the family member has begun receiving unemployment benefits, attach copies of all pages of his or her certificate of eligibility for employment insurance benefits.

As soon as the reason for removing the family member arises
* Submit to: HR Service Center (in the Osaka office)
Applies to:
Insured persons with dependents who meet the following descriptions:
  • No longer eligible as dependents due to reasons such as employment, living apart from the insured person, death, or other reasons
  • No longer satisfy the conditions for certification as dependents due to increased income
  • No longer rely on the income of the insured person for their livelihood because the insured person no longer provides an allowance
  • Receiving unemployment benefits
